Peter JE Matthews

Peter J E Matthews has experimented with the image of the sea for many years, including the desolation of winter windswept promenades and exuberant summer south coast piers. Recently he has returned to the theme of the Lido including the beautiful art deco example in Penzance. Many of his paintings break up the picture surface into separate canvasses without losing the atmosphere of place. They are intentionally theatrical and attempt to catch the fleeting moments of a summer memory of breeze, sun, warmth and anticipation, set against the deep distant perspective of a cobalt sea. His personal tutors during his time at art college and university included Terry Frost and David Inshaw. He is now working on a series based on Port Isaac, Rock and Polzeath.
